Hello,

Because I had sometimes vibration when I shifter into reverse and 1st to 2nd gear switch was kind of rough, I just changed 7 quarts of transmission oil and filter. Inside the pan I found alot of metal dust and dirt and figured it had never been cleaned. Transmission is alot nicer now, The car has over 100,000 miles.

How ofter should I perform this transmission cleaning procedure?

every 30-50k miles depending on how the fluid looks. how big were the metal pieces on the magnet?

Metal fragments were microscopic. But the amount of them was fairly high. It took about 10 bounty sheets to wipe it off before I cleaned it with brakeclean. I love the way my tranny works now. Id recommend this procedure to anyone with an old car 100%.

i would never change the fluid in the trans on a car w/ close to or over 100k miles unless i am certain it has been regularly done in the past.. when you drain that old fluid out all the loose clutch material goes w/ it and you are left w/ big spaces between the clutches usually resulting in slippage

he didnt flush the fluid, just replaced what was in the pan and the filter. nothing should have been dislodged since its just a pan of old fluid that was replaced wiht a pan of new fluid and a clean filter(IIRC the old trany fluid was burnt and lost most of its viscal properties thus the reason for the change)

Why take it to the dealer?
I say if your tranny is behaving normally and shifts nice and smooth, dont do it. If shifts between gears are almost unnoticeable and do not jolt the car than most probably the fluid is good condition and there isnt too much dirt in the system/filter.

If you do notice harder than usual shifts especially 1st to 2nd gears (like I had) changing the filter wouldnt hurt, UNLESS you flush the entire system, Flushing is not recommended and may lead to tranny failure in future.
