My daughters 2000 5.3. Makes a whirring sound in park, reverse and neutral.
In drive it will go but not shift out of 1st. Fluid level ok and had been serviced last fall.
Any Ideas?

Broken Sun Shell.

Is this common for this tranny? How much to fix? Complete rebuild or just replace part/ gaskets etc?

It's fairly common for that year (and others). From what I understand, the part is cheap, but the labor - if it's not a rebuild, it costs like it may as well be.

It is not the same as the torque converter. The planetaries are inside of it.

whats your experience with the manual trannys. i have the nv 3500. which apperears to be very week. I am wondering about web sites or info on swapping out to either the heavier 4500 or just somthing mor beatable. and about that sun shell i learened somthing hnew today thanks. but does that mean someone had to beat on that guys truck preety hard to break it. like a burn out or somthing?...jj
