I took my car into a mechanics shop because it had been making a very loud strange noise when turning. I thought maybe I needed a new power steering pump or belt. NOPE! My rack and pinion is leaking on the drivers side of the car, a repair the mechanic told me could run me $700 minimum. I don't know about anyone else here, but I don't have that kinda money to throw into the P.O.S.! Does anybody know how to install this part?? I know where to get it, I just don't know about installation. My dad was a mechanic, but i want to find out everything I can about it before asking him! HELP PLEASE!!!

My car is a 2000, Pontiac Grand Prix GT, 3.8 liter V6.

The rack is mounted behind the engine at the base of the firewall. Without a hoist, it is EXTREMELY difficult to get to and replace. It's not a technically difficult job, but getting to the mounts and the power steering hoses with the car on jack stands is an exercise in frustration at best, dangerous at worst. It is large, cumbersome piece that can be very difficult to get out and back in.

I had my R&P replaced about a year ago...same problem to, it was leaking from teh drivers side...is that a common issue that others have seen?

$700 seems about right for an R&R.

Are you getting the rack from the dealer or aftermarket

What's teh warranty that your getting with your $$?

Honestly it's not a question of ability, but with a piece like that...it is tough to do without a lift.

Good luck with whatever you end up doing.
