Radiator/Cooling System

I'm contemplating doing some preventative maintenence to my 1993 Grand Prix involving the cooling system.

I want to get the T-Stat replaced as I'm reasonably sure that it's sticking from time to time (or the rad is clogged). When I stop at a stop light, temp will usually climb to about 215ish before it starts to slowly drop back down to 200 (although sometimes it will remain steady at 200 with barely any movement).

So, since I'm replacing the T-Stat I got thinking that perhaps I might be wise to do it all - radiator replacement and heater core as well as I'm reasonably sure they're both original, as a fair amount of the radiators fins on the bottom half are bent near the air dam.

My question is this: any ideas on how much all of that may cost me? I'm kind of at a cross-roads with the car. The engine is still really strong and the interior is in nice shape with none of the dash buckling or headliner sag that the W-Bodies tend to get after a while. But I have to get the AC system repaired plus the expense of a radiator/heater core, the cost is going to add up quickly. On the other hand, if I get another car of similar age/mileage I may be taking on more problems...

Anyone have any ideas on cost of all that work? Doesn't have to be accurate to the penny but a ballpark figure would be helpful.

Thanks,
Kevin

Replacing the heater core, radiator and thermostat will cost you about $350 if you do the work yourself. However, I really don't think you have an issue here. The car going to 215 is normal and slowly dropping back probably indicates that the fans are working as they should. Changing the thermostat will probably cost you $10. The AC system will cost you the most to repair as you depending on the parts it can cost up to $1000 if the entire system needs to be replaced. If only the compressor needs replaced, get one from a wrecking yard. Just make sure to flush the system with the proper cleaner and replace the filter and the accumulator. This will make the system live a long life.

Have a '96 Grand Prix that is having the same problem. When idling the temp goes into the Red and only goes down when start going again. Sounds like a T-stat to me, so I was relieved when I saw this post. Is this the actual problem? Have you been able to fix it yet?

Edit: Ugh... she just told me her AC isn't working either. Related?

I haven't had the chance to replace the thermostat yet, but mine won't go into the red - it gets to about 230 or so. The cooling fans are working properly, and the car never overheats (knock on wood) so I'm not in a rush to replace the T-Stat.

Another thing to look at might be your water pump and you may want to check that your fans are working properly.
