Oil Question

I have a question that I've always wondered... Which synthetic Oil brand is better??

Personally I am not really up on them but I got My GP from my uncle which he babied and always used Mobil 1 so since the car has always used that oil I have kept on using it and I'm not gonna switch to regular oil since I don't wanna risk getting a leak...
But which brand is the best????
I heard that Royal Purple is supposedly really good, but is cost more than $6 a quart which is up there.....
What ya'll suggest?? Should I switch to another brand or stay with Mobil 1??

I don't know if anyone can actually answer that question. Mobil 1 is as good as anything else. Royal Purple, Amsoil, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline, Castrol and etc. Synthetic is synthetic, it holds up better to heat and keeps wear to a minimum. I use Mobil 1 in my GTP, Vibe and Chrysler Pacifica. I have used Amsoil but that is the limit of my experience with synthetics. So you will have to choose which one you want to use and stay with.

Mobil 1 is OEM in most exotics and performance vehicles (Porsche, Corvette, BMW M-cars, etc...) so if I were to buy a synthetic, that's what I'd go with. It's my personal opinion that synthetics are a waste of money on anything you don't beat to death. I've never had an oil related failure in any vehicle I've ever owned. Most have went well past 200k and were still running fine when I sold them. My 11 second Cutlass ran nothing but Valvoline conventional oil, and I never hurt a single engine piece due to an oil problem in 4 years of racing it.

I have used Mobile 1 synthetic for about 70,000 miles now. The past year I have switched to the Walmart brand fully synthetic. Its alot cheaper and seems to be the same. I used to work at walmart and they told me that Tech 2000 oil comes from Moblie. Walmart uses Mobile 1(tech 2000)regular oil on there changes.

Along the lines of what richtazz said, the key to longevity of any engine is to make sure you change the oil regularly so that the oil does not break down and create sludge inside the engine.

I once tore down and reassembled an engine that had 250K miles on it and had only ever had synthetic oil put in it. At 250K all bearings, crank journals and cylinder walls were within original specs with no wear what so ever. So we reassembled the engine with no machine work except a valve job and light honing of the cylinders so the rings would seat. I was sold on synthetics ever since.

I've always used regular Havoline in mine and I change it every 5000 miles which is usually every 8-10 weeks. I also have had oil analysis done several times and they were all good. The key to my success may be the mild climate I'm in (middle Georgia), and a commute of 50 miles to work. No one else drives the car but me and I watch everything on it pretty closely and don't dog it or drive it hard. I will run it about 70-80 out on the Interstates occasionally. My conditions don't really warrant synthetic so dino works for me.
