I got a 97 wagon with about 76,000 miles and it is a great ecconomical car. Repairs are dirt cheap if you can do them yourself. Only problems that I have had ever since owning new is: a/c stoped blowing cold, I think there is a leak in the system, coil just replaced last week; I was driving it basically with 3 cylinders for the longest time and now that I have a new coil it feels like I put a whole bunch of performance mods on it compared to how it was, before it was slugish and now I can easily drive on the highway with ease, and the e-brake line started to stick but I did a whole bunch of e-brake drifts in the cold so I killed that. I was going to change the timming belt at 60k but I looked in the manual and it said 120k. This is a 8v engine and it is made to be a long daily driver. If it is well taken care of then you could easily go over 200,000 miles. I think it is a good deal and you will be pleased. Oh and have you checked the gas prices lately? You will get great mpg, I think its 27city/34highway.

I got 143k on my 97 SPI 2.0. Only repairs I've done not normal Maintenance are a crankshaft pulley and timing ring at 50k. did the work myself and the parts were $20 at the boneyard. Also, the hose between the filler neck and the gas tank rotted out. $16 for the hose and $74 to get it put on. Would have done it myself but was far from home and my tools. That's a good price to pay. Dealer trade in is $800 and average selling price by individual is $1800.
Dealer price is $3000. I get 35 to 40 mpg in town and 40 to 46 mpg on the highway. I'd advise anybody to buy a 97 Ford Escort.
