1980 Sportsman Van Backfires through Carb then stallsdean941 04-10-2006, 01:11 PM 360 cid with thermoquad It starts runs smooth but ant any moment (while driving) it backfires out the carb and stalls out then it takes a while for it to start up again. I replaced the carb all the plugs and wires. It still is doing this. Could it Be a blocked Cat convertor; timing chain and gear slipping; ignition module..Im not sure...what could it be or where should i look first to resolve issue. TY fredjacksonsan 04-24-2006, 09:27 AM How many miles? I recall that the 70's 360's had a problem with the timing chain stretching in about 70-80k miles. Does it run fine at higher rpm in neutral, but start to bog when you put a load on it, or when running slowly? Timing chain symptom. I wouldn't count out the cap and rotor also, you didn't mention that you'd replaced them. slantsixness 04-24-2006, 10:25 AM Ignition parts shorting out, Timing chain. bad cam. worn valve springs. Not likely the Catalytic converter. Ususally a clogged cat wont cause the motor to shut off, just noticeably loose power. dean941 07-19-2007, 12:05 AM I replaced cap and rotor. It backfires while in drive only like after a few miles. It is a 1980 dodge van. (Some say it May be a ECU, Coil, fuel pump or Ballast resistor)(does this year even have a ballast resistor)...:banghead: Im about ready to start working on on it again and hope fix it soon rhandwor 08-23-2007, 07:01 PM I have had a bad valve guide and the rocker moved good but every once in a while it would change position and the engine would miss and then run properly. Pull the valve cover and watch. You can move the valve by hand if worn. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
