Another hot start problem

I own a 97 riv, all the problems following get much worse in hot weather and when eengine is warm. In winter the problems are almost non-existent (32f and lower temp). If I drive the car for more than 15 minutes and shut it off and leave it sit for 20-90 minutes and try to start it either it will not start without waiting or I have to repeatedly try with short starter engagements (1 sec or shorter), then the car will start with a sputter adn run poorly until i give a little throttle. If I shut the car off and immeatiatly try to start the car it will start with no problems.

In hot weather driving down the road with very little throttle only the car will miss!? it feels like hitting a speed bump, it only does this with very small ammount of throttle feed. I also have another probably related problem with warm engine sometimes when coming to a stop the car will surge forward like you hit the throttle, and on occasion will do this and die. Overall the car seems to lack power, and only runs good for first 2 miles when engine is cold. Problem also seems to be worse with a full tank?!?:banghead: any help much appreciated thanks.

im stumped but if it were me i would replace the fuel filter and run some injector cleaner through the car. are there any trouble codes on? it could also be a vac leak, check all the rubber hoses around the boost bypass canister and look for brittle hoses and leaks.

I scanned the codes today and got camshaft position sensor code. I have already replaced it so I'm not sure what to think. I've heard that you can get a code for camshaft sensor if you have a miss, is this true?

i am asuming you have a P0336?? if the engine has too much knock or you go over a lot of bumps then it can set off the position cam sensor. mine is currently loose from hitting the box when changing belts on my 96 riv. if you remove the cam postion sensor then you must do a "case learn" if you replaced the sensor and didnt notice a difference then get a case learn done...im not totaly sure how to do it but it requires a scan tool so you may want to take it to a local shop or look up how to on the net. if the actual cam was at fault then your car would not start. also on my car, when the cam reads wrong(due to too many bumps and a loose sensor) it feels like the car miss fires or the TTC slips then the traction off light comes goes on, no ses just a pending P0336(position cam sensor), are you seeing the same thing?

BTW i was looking at your first post and having a full tank in hot weather puts extra load on the cars trany so you may want to pull the dip stick on the trans and see how the fluid looks and smells.

yes just recently the traction and abs light came on. i thought a
case learn was for crank sensor not cam but i could be wrong. is the
cam sensor really fragile like the parts store said. I also have a transaxle mount that is going bad and causes quite a bit of vibration, I wonder if that is setting off the knock sensor.

I did just verify that a case learn is required when camshaft pos. sensor is replaced so I'm not sure if this will solve my problems or not but I hope so. I will let you know when it's done.
