94 Grand Steering Dampener (how to remove?)

Hello everyone. I know that sounds like an idiotic question, but how do you remove the end of the unit from the steering arm? With some PB and the armstrong method, I got the frame-side end off without too much grief, but the side connected to the steering arm isn't even hinting at moving. Does the bolt thread completely through the steering arm, or is there a sleeve where the bolt passes through the arm? I really can't tell on mine.

On the steering arm side, I removed the cotter pin and that funky nut without any trouble. I didn't want to hit the protuding threaded end with a hammer to dislodge it, in case it it threaded all the way through the steering arm. I put a 3/4" open end wrench on the "nut" that is on the other side of the steering arm to no avail.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated. I've got a beautiful yellow OME unit sitting there, waiting to go to work.

Thanks,

Paul

I believe it's going to take a breaker bar and maybe a pipe to loosen the nut. I tried with a torque wrench and couldn't budge mine. I finally ended up taking my Jeep to the shop and had them put it on. That might be what you end up doing. SJ

Bummer. So it is threaded all the way through the steering arm, eh?

Thanks!

Interesting. That would mean it isn't threaded through the steering arm then, correct? Was yours a '94 Grand Cherokee as well? I'm wondering if the design was different from model to model and from year to year (such that some are threaded and some aren't).

Ok, I'm feeling like an idiot now. After I remove the cotter pin and nut from the threaded part that passes through the steering arm, I need to use the gear puller to push the threaded part through the steering arm, correct? I can't see any other way to get that thing out of there.

The problem is, there is a bunch of sheet metal right where I need to put the gear puller, so I can't get a decent shot at it. Does that mean my only recourse is to hammer on the end of the threaded piece to try and push it through the steering arm?

Believe it or not, I'm no rookie at working on my vehicles, but I've never yanked one of these off before.

Thanks much!

do u have the jeep jacked up on stands w/ the front end hanging down as low as possible, you should be able to get at it.

I had it up some, but the tires were still on the ground. I'll get 'er up in the air higher tonight. Thank you for the tip!

It's a compression fit and the unthreaded part you can't see is slightly angled so it goes in really snug. The thread and nut you see is what draws it tight.

Get it up in the air like dksob says and use some sort of puller, fork bar, or shock from a hammer. It comes out.

I finally got it off, thanks to all the help I got there. I ended up heating it up, and putting a sledge hammer on the back side of the steering arm as a brace (pulling it towards me, if you can picture it), and then beating on the end of the threaded portion with another sledge. After about three rounds of this, it went flying. It took me all of 5 minutes to put the OME unit on.

Thanks again~
