Well I couldn't go to the Famoso Speedway, as apparently they had some damage done to the track, and needed repairs.

Anyways, I decided to call up my buddy Danno, and do an impromptu run on the street. He's been practicing alot with launching, and thinks he can do somewhat well. He knows my car is faster, but we both don't know by how much.

We head out to San Fernando Road. It's a road where all the illegal street races use to take place, until they came up with the extremely strict laws in California on street racing this was the spot. I don't want to signal us, as i've had some people say that I take off too soon, so I have him do it.

1st Run:

Danno says he will count to 3, and then we both go. He counts 1-2-3
I rev the car to 1K rpms, doing a close to idle take off (I'm on street tires). He apparently tried to let off at a loftier rpm. He spins like crazy, and I immediately get a half car on him. That was until I got greedy, and matted the gas. Big mistake in 1st gear with 4.10's. The car starts spinning, and partially moving sideways, though not quite to the extent that Danno's car was doing. I had to shift to second, seeing as to how my car was on ice skates. I hit second, and put Danno around my rear bumper. By the top of 2nd i'm furthering the lead. I granny shift 3rd, and put another 2 cars on him. I shift to 4th, and let off at 100 mph. I have a good 3 1/2 cars on him.

2nd Run:

Danno counts to 3, and we are off. I repeat the same launch technique, but roll into the throttle. This produces a sick launch. By the top of 1st i've got a car and a half to two cars on Danno. He said he launched clean, but I basically got out of the hole alot harder. Same results with me putting alot of distance between our two cars. Danno says I had him by a solid 4 cars.

3rd Run:

I nail a good launch, as does Danno. I've got a car length lead, and slightly lose a little of it when I shift to second. I can hear his motor in my ear, so I know he was around my rear bumper. I hard shift second, chirp the tires, and put a good 2 cars on him. This time I decided not to granny shift to 3rd, and just flat out nail it. I put another car length on him. By 100mph in 4th i've got another 4 car lead win.

4th run:

We both our moving at roughly 5-10mph. Danno and I both go at the same time. Fuck man, no advantage from gears here. He's made a slight lead by the end of 1st (I spun a little, but it's obvious his car has got around the same power as mine does). I shift to 2nd and make up some ground. I put about a half car on him by the top of 2nd. I shift to 3rd, and start to put a little distance on him.

All in all, I can't wait to get some track times with the 4.10's. I know how to launch with them on street tires, but will definitely be running them on drag radials when I go to the track.

P.S. I think my clutch is going. Upon every single run upon reaching for 4th I felt the clutch pedal literally only come off the floor by about 2 inches. It felt abnormally spongy. I almost felt like lifting it off the floor with my foot. It seemed like it cooled off, and the clutch would finally have its normal firmness after a couple minutes.

nice races man. What year is your buddys gto? Wish i could race u. You might want to look at a set of micky thompson et streets. Would help ur launches alot.

He has an 05 GTO. I have a set of BFG Drag Radials. I only put them on when I go to the track. They definitely help though.

I had the same problem with my car. It takes alot of finness to launch on street tires.

I dunno, I think beating Danno by 1-2 cars outta the hole was pretty good on street tires. I'm confident I could cut a 2.1 sec. 60' on street tires. Dunno about the drag radials though. It all depends on whether the clutch stays intact :D

Check the fluid level in your cylinder

also it probably is going out, I just replaced mine as it was doing the same thing

lol that sounded wrong the first time i saw it!!!
no offense.

i knew what you meant though

Yeah, I have 4.10's, so the car is basically around redline at 110mph in 4th gear. I think 3rd gear maxes around high 80'ish.

Seems perfectly logical to me.

Fun runs Bobby! The first run was comical. It was synchronized spinning. It was a good thing you spun less and got that 1/2 car to 1 car lead of the line. We could of both been looking at some expensive fender repairs if you didn't.

The second run I rolled on the throttle but hit the rev-limiter on both the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. It really didn't matter though cause you had a pretty good hole-shot.

The third run I rolled on the throttle and hung a bit better but like you said by the top of second you were pulling hard.

The 4th run was the closest as launch techique wasn't as important. I gently rolled into the throttle while crossing the intersection then went 3/4 throttle on the other side and rolled into the remainder, didn't break traction at all in 1st. I shifted into 2nd cleanly, car got a little squirrly, and I could hear you coming up. I thought I was doing pretty good job of holding you off. I once again hit the rev-limiter on the 2-3 but the shift was clean. Once you hit 3rd you started pulling hard. I was about 1.5-2 cars behind when I let off at the top of 3rd (~100mph).

I might have to invest in some DRs. The again more seat time may be a better use of my time. :grinyes:

Yeah, that last run had me scared. I was like WTF, his car is stock!!! WTF is wrong with my car?! I would say I maybe had a 1 1/2 length advantage on you on that run. Your car definitely is within my car's horsepower range. It's gotta be putting down atleast 340whp.

Nice kills LS1Z28. What kind of tires does your buddy have on the goat?

2000LS1Z28
04-02-2006, 08:42 PM
Danno's got the stock rubber on the car. Basically he has 245/50 17 tires as I recall. Not exactly wide enough to grip on. The extra 35mm I have helps to grip a little, though I have seen another buddy doing extremely well on the 245 rubber at the track (1.7 sec. 60', 1.9 sec. 60' street tires).

GTO = Disappointment

Is it a GTO or a Grand Prix? *shakes head*

What would you of liked then? Another cookie cutter me-too retro styling car?

I rather like the fact that it doesn't look like the older GTO. It makes it's own image. Rather than borrowing the styling ques of the old GTO cause the designers are lazy.

People may complain that the car isn't bold enough, or that it looks like a big cavalier, or in your case a Grand Prix. But that's cool in my eyes, it's subtle and under the radar. Which, is the original reciepe for a muscle car... that car you roll up on figuring it's some crap car... only to have it blow your doors off.

good point...and i respect your opinion

however I see a muscle car as a rumbling "hell on wheels" type of thing... like a pissed off linebacker.... i love the sleeper angle too, i had a 1994 buick regal (supercharged) that was looked at like an old granny car...and somehow i managed to use that rolling jenny craig candidate to smoke some unsespecting ricers...

I donno about the '04 GTO, but i definitly like the styling of the '06 with the dual exhaust, more aggresive hood scoops and much better looking 5-spoke wheels..

I agree with you on the 06, it's smooth but has enough flair to not be another pontiac (no offense)...:)

2006 GTO: Looks about the same except for the hood scoops and dual exhaust.

2004 GTO: Yeah kind of looks like a Grand Prix but I wouldn't be one to turn it down.

It's the tires, and trust me, you don't wanna buy em. They are like $300 a piece.

They're Kumho's... they made them for drifters, so when they drift their tire smoke is red.

I thought they stopped making them (they made them just to say they did it.)... and only sold them to the race guys and not to the general public? Hmm.

BFG Scorcher T/As also came in blue, red, and yellow. I think they discontinued them though.

06 GTO had minor upgrades over the 05: new body colors (Blazen Orange, Spice Red), new rear tail-lamps, quicker front-seat motors, and illuminated stereo controls.

Dude, my seat motors are still balls slow, I cant imagine how much slower they could possibly be!

And what is up with that shift-to-fourth thing? its so anoying when It trips on.
Can I dissable that?

Yeah Musashi, you're talking about Skip Shift. Just buy a skip shift eliminator for like $30. You can install it in 10 min. tops.

It's to get around the gas guzzler tax I believe

-The Stig-

Ha... you'll find yourself still skipping gears once you get tired of the poor gas milege.

If you shift every gear, you'll be in the low teens gas milege... garaunteed.

Still, HP = Fuel... part of the game. My LS1 had the Skipshift, and I still skipped gears. I usually went 1st to 3rd. Found it to be less of a severe drop in RPMs than 4th gear.

Once you've got that puppy broken in, you'll learn to love rainy days. 2nd gear around a corner with traction controll off, you can walk the rear end around with not much more than 1/4 throttle.

Fun times. About the only thing I liked about the Z28, was when the roads were greasy after it rained, it made for fun times.

dosent skipping gears damage the clutch? I mean it feels like its trying to bog out on me, its like taking off from 2nd or something.
I didnt know other cars had that skip gear program....

I can't say it's good for the clutch. But they designed the car to do it... sooo I'm going to assume it's alright.

If you want to get around it, just wind 1st gear out a bit longer than normal, and it'll turn off.
