98 Altima: Continuous Shrill noise from under the hood during idlingpiske 03-17-2006, 01:34 PM Hello, I hear an annoying noise from under the hood whenever I am not pressing the gas pedal. In Park, Neutral or Drive with the brakes on, I hear this noise and as soon as I start pumping gas, it goes away. It is quite annoying and I complained about it to the dealer when I did my 90K service last week, but he said he could not reproduce it. Now that I can constantly hear it I'm planning to take it back again next week. Does anyone know what this might be before I see the dealer again? Thnx, Piske InnerDragon103 03-17-2006, 05:41 PM Is it a pulse, or a constant noise? Altimas dont have timing belts, but they do have other belts, maybe one is worn.. Try opening the hood and telling us what area the noise is coming from. piske 03-17-2006, 05:58 PM Is it a pulse, or a constant noise? Altimas dont have timing belts, but they do have other belts, maybe one is worn.. Try opening the hood and telling us what area the noise is coming from. It is a constant noise like the hum of a bee. I can hear it to be coming from the left side in the hood, right opposite to where the battery is. It is a little deep in the sense that the source of noise seems to be coming from the bottom of the hood. Does the fact that the noise goes away when the gas pedal is pressed give any indication? Under driving condtions you may not hear it over engine rpms but when at idle sounds more pronouced. the pully rught below the engine mount on the pass side. it's the Alt idler pully that goes bad. Pretty comon . There is a updated idler now.. GL piske 03-20-2006, 10:43 PM there is an Ider pully that the bearing goes bad it makes a growling sound but can make other sounds as well. It is clearly coming from the passenger side and I can hear it only during idling. When I just press the gas pedal even in "Park", the noise goes away.
