Hey guys.... I was wondering about the overdrive gear in the 700-R4. (If it makes a difference, its a 1984 Chevy Caprice Sedan, w/ the 305 4bbl Q-jet) Is it an actual gear as the 1st 2nd and 3rd gears are, or is it just the torque converter locking up? Also, why is it that the tranny doesn't kick into overdrive at WOT? (Topped out in 3rd gear ~Not that I drive that fast all the time or anything.) Its a just wondering kind of thing. Thanks!!

#1 - it is an actual gear range - remember overdrive by definition is the output shaft spinning at a higher rate than the input shaft. I believe it's like .67:1 ratio vs 1:1 in direct.
#2 - so you don't burn up the transmission.

You can get a kit to allow OD at WOT. B&M makes one, or you can just use cop parts.

Wide Open Throttle

BTW, I missed when the 7000-R4 came out. That thing must be quite an improvement over the 700-R4.

HAHAHAHAHA!! I choked on my popcorn when I read that. Its obviously a typo (smartass).

New Question: Isnt the tranny governed at a certain speed? If I did get the kit to let it shift into OD at WOT then wouldn't the governor stop it from going any faster? Could the governor be disabled and how? Thanks for the fast response guys!!
