:screwy: 1993 Trooper has too much play in the steering. Any ideas on how to adjust out play. It says in the manual to have it adjusted around 90k. Would like to try this if possible. Thanks for any help offered...Jim

I also have this problem. It has alot of play while driving straight, i can turn the wheel from 11 to 1(if the steering wheel were a clock) and nothing will happen. Is this the same for you

I've also got the steering play in a 93. If you look under the hood, at the lower right towards the front (the driver's side toward's the bottom of the radiator) there's a screw with a flathead notch in it, with a nut around it(some part of the power steering box). Its a difficult spot to reach, but if you loosen the nut and then tighten the screw and see how well it affected the looseness. I did this once with my uncle and didn't get that far(it was rusted kinda tight and its difficult to get any leverage in there!), I pretty much said forget it as it wasn't that bad to begin with. A friend of mine has a Jeep Grand Cherokee (a piece of crap) and the steering play is pretty bad (maybe like between 10 and 2) anyway's its american so his problem is probably related to something far more serious so I considered my Trooper's steering play to be not that big of a deal. If you have trouble finding it I can post a picture/pictures.

Tighten the steering gear box a bit. Loosen the locking nut, turn the the screw clockwise while someone moves the steering slightly back and forth. It might take about a 1/4 turn. Retighten the locking nut without moving the srcrew. When driving check that the the steering wheel returns to center after a turn. If not you have tightened the gear box too much. This should take out some slopiness. More can be taken out by replacing the steering arm, tie rods etc.
