thanks for your suggestion - i had tried the spark plugs after posting, but still no luck, i gave in and called out green flag, it was the fuel pump (located in the boot) a quick bash with a screwdriver seemed to do the trick! i have replaced the pump to be on the safe side - thanks again.

Hi,

Just cured a similar problem to yours. I was at a garage & stopped to fill up.
Everything was fine until I went back to the car to drive away & it would'nt
start.

To anyone else out there the symptoms were as follows.

Engine turned over but would not start or even fire.
Checked for spark on one of the leads & nothing
No Pulse on the Low Voltage side of the HT coils

The car is a Renault Laguna 1997 RT Sport
Engine is 1800cc with Distributorless Ingnition

The Immobiliser Was Functioning Correctly, This can be verified by inserting the ignition key. If the little red light on the central locking button located by & just before the hand brake lever illuminates for 3 second and then goes out then everything is ok with the Central locking & immobiliser. Additional to this if there is a problem with the system then an amber light with a Zig/Zag symbol on the dash display will light and stay lit or flash. It will go out after a ferw seconds if all is ok.

O.K The problem was a relay which is located underneath or close to the battery. Mine was underneath the coolant header tank.
It is housed in a black plastic box and has two relay sockets, only one is used.
This is the Ingnition/Immobiliser relay. If it has bad connections or in my case had quite simply popped out of the socket on one side then you will not be able to start the engine.

Everything will seem ok apart from no spark/ignition

If this is not your problem then try the crank sensor located on the left end of the cylinder head/camshaft cover.
It is inserted into what would look like a distributor cap. Undo the Torx retaining screw and withdraw.
These are pretty reliable but worth a look.

Best Of Luck
