Is the 7th gen D still a D at heart?

My question is this. My only reason for not likeing the 7th generation civics is both the suspension and engine but the engine kinda concerns me. I know that it's code is being under the D series but is the 1.7 liter still as great as the D16y8 it replaced from the 6th generation? Doesn't it have like a direct ignition and a plastic intake manifold or something? Would you say that it is the best d series engine yet or still can't beat the 6th gens d's? I think this is a great topic for discussion.

Yes I would say that the 7th gen D series are the best so far, when they are compared as bone stock. They are great little motors, efficient and reliable. But I think the issue is "tune-ability". Yes the 7th gens were the first Civic motors to utilize direct ignition. Although efficient, I think it took a bit more to tune this thing than the 6th gens with distributor. Actually a lot more... And for this reason, I think the a lot of aftermarket manufacturers really didn't get into parts for 7th gens. Not that it couldn't be done, but it couldn't be done at a reasonable price. So far the only full engine management that I know of is AEM EMS. It costs more than $3K and all it does it gives you a manual tune option. (Whatever happened to the good-ol-days of adjusting a couple of fuel mixture screws, turning distributor for timing, changing distributor weights for advance curve, and calling it quits!!!) Anyway, I think the Honda engineers realized this flaw, and they reintroduced the new SI. I think the car is definitely tuning friendly and based on RSX-S' success, it already has tons of parts out for upgrade.

Anyways, I love my D17A6. But it pretty much is all stock and I don't think there is a reason for me to try to even think about making it better. I think the gain is pretty low for amount of money that one needs to spend. But you know, that is just my :2cents:

Would you say that it feels more powerful than the D16y8? And I think i read somewhere that there is a plastic intake manifold on it or something like that? Not sure if that sounds right.

i dont think a d17 makes any more hp but it does make more torque

It sure does have a plastic intake. Now days, many new cars are that way. It just has a heat shielding gasket and bolts right onto the head.

Yeah as stock power is concerned, there really isn't much difference. But then it is making the same power with less fuel consumption. So more efficient...
