Pictures of decarb process

Owner of a 2000 windstar 3.8 i nned to do the decarbon with the pm-2 and pm-3 my question is do i need to buy these parts from ford and does anyone have pictures on how to do this job :uhoh:

I'm not familiar with "pm-2" or "pm-3". What are you referring to?

Having spent a fair amount of time with my 2000 Winstar LX 3.8, I'd also encourage you to take a very close look at this procedure:

It covers a common set of problems that our engines almost always have at 60K+ miles. Note that I was having problems (pinging, uneven running) even though I didn't yet have error codes. The good news: After performing the procedure (replace gasket port seals, isolator bolts, clean EGR ports) my Windstar runs great.

Part#s PM-2 and PM-3 are listed in the de-carbonize process outlined in TSB 04-19-2. I posted this in a thread a while back but the search isn't working this morning:

De-carbonize engine.

NOTE DO NOT ADMINISTER CARBURETOR TUNE-UP CLEANER (PM-2 or PM-3) THROUGH THE THROTTLE BODY/PLATE OPENING.

a. Start engine and bring it up to operating temperature, then shut the engine off.

b. Remove the PCV valve from the valve cover and remove the PCV from the hose.

c. Have an assistant start the engine and hold at 2000 RPM:

(1) PM-2 CARBURETOR TUNE-UP CLEANER (AEROSOL) 18 OZ.: Spray the entire can into the end of the PCV hose.

(2) PM-3 CARBURETOR TUNE-UP CLEANER 16 FL. OZ. (LIQUID): Insert the PCV hose into the can allowing the engine to ingest the entire can.


CAUTION DO NOT ALLOW THE ENGINE TO INGEST PM-3 TOO QUICKLY DUE TO POTENTIAL HYDRO-LOCK CONDITION.

d. When Step "c" is completed, shut off the engine immediately and allow it to soak for ten (10) minutes.

e. Start engine, bring it up to 2000 RPM and let it run for a few minutes at that RPM to clean it out.

f. Install the PCV valve back into the hose and insert it back into the valve cover.

g. Road test vehicle for 2-3 miles.

h. Repeat De-carbonize procedure one additional time if needed.

i. Change oil and filter after final de-carbon process.


Both PM-2 and PM-3 are very inexpensive and can be ordered online, I found them both at 1stfordparts.com for around $4 each.

You could also use a can of SeaFoam, found at most NAPA, Advance and AutoZone Auto Parts stores.
SeaFoam is good for the gas tank as a fuel injector cleaner and in the Motor Oil...

I also read in another post that the poster used a sports ball inflation needle to control the flow in the second step of the process. You know the kind of needle that you use with a pump to inflate a basketball, soccer ball, etc. They put the threaded end of the needle into a piece of vacuum line which in turn friction fit into the EGR line. They then put the needle into the can of liquid cleaner which regulated the amount of liquid to totally avoid hydro lock.

Thumbs up on the Seafoam product line.

I've used Sea Foam as well, and also like Berryman's. Berryman's, like PM-2 and PM-3, has the advantage of being available in both liquid and aerosol form.

Seamfoam also comes in an aerosol can called Deep Creep. Good stuff.

I know this may be stupid question but is it necessary to change the oil and filter after this process? I just found this site and I just recently changed the oil. I am using Mobil 1 synthetic and I am not really excited to do it again soon. However, I want to do this cleaning because I think it will help get rid of some of the knocking in the engine.

Mike,

Yes the Ford service procedure for the decarb process has as the final step to change the oil and filter.

I assume that there is some fine carbon that washes past the piston rings into the oil oan.
