Here's a question that's probably been asked a few times here. The time has come for a BMW, finally :)

I have long lusted after BMW and the time, and finance, has finally arrived. I have been thinking of the 5 series in particular and more precisely a late 90's 5 series like '98 or a '99. I am curious about peoples opinion of the 528i and the 540i. Is one generally regarded as superior to the other so far as reliability goes? or are they similar in that respect?
When looking to buy a BMW 5 of this vintage is there anything in particular to pay attention to, ie: any serious issues with either vehicle that might not be generally known by the un-initiated.
I appriciate ANY advice on either of these two cars that people would be interested in giving.
