Does it sometimes fail for no reason? It sounds like the same problem I had with my dakota. What I would recomend if your farily handy is to tke the dash apart and then remove the speedometer and check and see if the conection is loose it might be a plug that is loose or if it's like mine it will have 3 pins in the back of the dash that the speedo plugs into if so then reinstall the speedo and once you get the screws in loose push the speedo down lightly and tighten the screws. I have had to do this a couple times and the first time it will take you an afternoon but now I can do it in like half an hour.

Check the connection to your speedo like Brent suggested. If everything there is fine, you may want to check the connection of the speed sensor, which is on your tranny. I had to replace mine in my 97 a few months ago. Symptoms of it going out are: needle jumps sporadically, odometer/speedometer failure, car randomly decides not to start, PCM throws out codes for problems that may not be wrong, and the car starts hesitating or lurching ar driving speeds. Hope this helps.
