Sebring-locked steering column-can't start!

I have a 98 Sebring and the steering column has locked/froze up and I can't turn the key at all to get the car started. I have tried adjusting the column position to see if this would help, tried taking it in and out of gear a few times to see if it wasn't in the parking gear but nothing has worked.
I now have to have it towed and the local mechanic has no idea what to do.

When I first got the car, I had the alarm system removed and ever since then, I've had problems with the steering column either the key won't go in far enough to catch it to turn on or it freezes up like this. This time, I can't get it unstuck at all. Any ideas???? Hope I'm posting correctly now!:screwy:

I had a similar problem while stuck in traffic. The car locked up and I couldn't move the gear selector to drive.Simply touching the brake pedal released it.Whatever makes that work could be bad in your case.A bad switch or something like that could be the problem. Good Luck
