Hi
I just bought a '86 dodge Ram B150 van with a 318 and have encountered the same problem. I just bought a new battery at Walmart last night(model Dt-3N for the top and bottom terminals or model # 34-3N for the top mounts only), well anyways, it's still not enough cranking power. I'm going to bring it back and buy the $59.99 heavy duty one. The one I bought was $42.99.
Depending where you live, you may even need more cranking power. I'm up in NY, up by Canada, very cold weather=more cranking amps.

I just got off the phone with one of my Dodge buddies, he said for the 318 we should ahev no less than 700 or 750 cold cranking amps and receommended a Decker battery. He said Decker comes with a lengthy warranty(like 5 years) and is American made.

Did you replace the voltage regulator?
With the engine running check the voltage on the battery from post to post with no accessories turned on. you should have a reading close to 14 volts.
