ok, i have a 94 thunderbird with the 4.6 v-8 and ive been havin a problem with the check engine lite being on, when i first start the car in the mornings when its cold, it runs pretty crappy the first 5-10 mins until it gets warmed up, like it has a miss, now i took the car to the shop and told them to do a tune up on the car, plugs and wires and check the engine lite deal out, so they said i had 2 problems , 1 the egr sensor and solenoid were bad, and 2 the intake had a vaccuum leak, so they went ahead and did the work and i got the car back and damn if it doesnt still have the check engine lite on and still do the missin thing, i told them that and they said well we can look into it more but the problems we found were real and needed to be fixed, so now i have new plugs and wires, a supposedly fixed vaccum leak in the intake and new egr sensor and solenoid, any other ideas on why this thing is still missing especially when cold? not waistin my money at a shop anymore:disappoin

not sure what code its reading now, im gonna take it to autozone were they hook it up no charge, as far as plugs and wires he told me the car needed platinum plugs so thats what im assuming they put in and plug wires are a 8mm wire, they look good!

well i just went to my local autozone to get them to read the code for the check engine lite and they said they didnt start doin the obd2 plugs or whatever until like 96 so i guess id have to get it done the hard way and pay someone another 50-60 bux and figure out what the problem is now:mad: , the car runs perfect once its nice and warmed up just when its cold it runs kinda crappy

a 94 tbird with a 4.6 should be obd 2. obd 2 became mandated in 96, however plenty of cars were using obd 2 as early as 94. so go back to autozone and have them pull codes.

96 was the first year for OBD II, the other cars have the OBD II connector but it doesn't do anything, you have to use the EEC connector under the hood.

My 95 has OBD II. However I do not believe the 94 did. I KNOW mine is a functional plug becuase I watched my friend pull the codes and I showed him where the plug was on the passenger side under the dash. You are correct though when you say it was mandated until 96 but I KNOW 95's have it but I do not think 94's do. However I could be wrong.

96 was the first year that obd 2 became mandated here in the U.S. however some fords(and other manufaturers) have used it since 94. Although they are not fully compliant with the obd 2 standards set forth by the goverment, codes can be pulled from these vehicles just like any other obd 2 system. the 94 bird and cougar with a 4.6 are obd 2, however the 3.8's are not. also the 94 mustang with a 3.8 is obd2 compatible while the V8's are not. then theres the 95 windstar and ranger too.

ok, so i found out there is a obd2 plug on the pass side, it was tucked up under there pretty good, so i went back to autozone and they plugged it in and the code they got is P1406 auxillary emmisions control, any ideas on what that could be??

ok, i just did a search on obd2 codes and it says for the p1406 code its a egr code, now i supposedly had the egr sensor and solenoid replaced, were is the egr located on the 4.6 engine so i can try to check and see if its new.:banghead:

I'm sorry if this is an old trade but I have the exact same problem and the same 1994 v8 4.6 thunderbird. I was wondering if you got that problem fixed and if you could tell me what you did to fix it, that would be great.
thanks

yes, it still sounds like you have a vaccuum problem. EGR issues likely. another thing you could do, is open up the mass air module on your intake ( likely needs tamper proof bits), and check if there is any corrosion on the very thin element. if the element is dirty or corroded, it can cause performance issues, this happened to mine, and I cleaned it and it fixed the problem. Just be very careful that you do not touch the element, and use an appropriate electrical parts cleaner.
