I have a 2000 Trooper with 70,000 miles and Friday (it was -20 in Minneapolis) it was very cold and my Check Trans light came on and then my check engine light came on. Truck ran fine and seems to be shifting fine also. Any ideas what could cause this?

I had something simular happen to my truck last week to due to the cold. I started drove about 100 yards and then it died. I restarted and teh check tranny light flashed for about 20 seconds and then all was fine.

My suggestion is head to an autozone and have the codes read for free. Also, it might be worth, undoing the battery for 30 mintues to reset the codes (after gong to autozone).

After you have the codes report back.

Had same problem on 99. With help from this forum, turned out to be a classic transmission position switch gone bad. I got the two lights intermittently, sometimes when I'd hit a pothole. It sits right next to the exhaust, some guys disassemble and lubricate, I bought a new one for around $40 as I recall, not too hard to install. If nothing comes up in the codes, might consider this.

Was the Check tranny light blinking?
I have had that happen 3-4 times. It was the tranny "lockup". A device that locks the torque converter at ~40>45 mph to improve fuel economy.

Every time I had the problem, it was at the same place, on my way home from skiing, cold night, first uphill climb.

It kept blinking for the whole 1 hour ride home every time. Then next day it was OK.

I think that under the cold conditions, the lockup device doesn't move into position. The computer doesn't notice that there is some slip between the engine RPMs and the wheel speed until I hit the hill and the load causes the tranny to slip a little.

the CRAZY lights came on again, I am gogin to go gett the codes read this time. LAst tiem I waited too long and they couldn't pull anything up? Can you tell me where I can find the; "classic transmission position switch"? Thanks again you all have been a HUGE HELP!

Maybe I wasn't clear enough with my post above. That is exactly how mine acts. It comes on under the same conditions every time. Goes out the next day.

I did follow your responce and put my problem off, however it was warm yesterday and only going 10 mph around a corner when it happend? I do appriciat the advice, I am just moronic when it comes to car problems.........

I had the code read and it is P1870, which I'm thinking is probably that switch?

The light comes and goes eevry other day now, do you think the cleaning of the switch will resolve this problem? THANKS SO MUCH GENTS!

Not sure if this could be caused by the switch or not.

So it may be something more serious? I was thinking it was that crazy switch that I was told to clean??? Any more advice would be grat, thanks again for the insight!

Do a quick search on this forum for the code. Basically, most people are saying it could be related to electrical problems, alternator, etc or the transmission my be going out. If it feels ok, some people have stated driving several thousands of miles without problems. Check out the posts for more details.
