I've done this a few weeks ago on a 97 LXi, and I played hell trying to get to the damn screws at the motor. It was difficult, but I didn't have to remove the gears/transmission. What I would do first is get a multimeter and check the electrical connector when the window switch is applied. It should go from about 12 volts when you press up/down and -12 volts when the other direction is applied. If it doesn't fluctuate like this, it is most likely the switch.
