I have a problem. My mom totaled her 1993 Mercury Topaz today. However, we have no way to get rid of it. We don't have the title because it was bought from a used car dealership that has gone out of business. We live in NJ. Please post your ideas about what we could do.

... why would you have no title just because it was bought at a used car lot? That goes through the DMV when you buy the car....

Payments were still being made on the car and it went out of business. When my mom went to ask for the title, they were already gone....

I'd work with your insurance company, tell them about the situation. They should be able to track down the title for them.

In this case, I wouldn't retain the car.
