I'm changing the transmission fluid and filter on my '98 neon. I dropped the pan to find no gasket, just a black RTV sealant used. This appears to be original, I don't think it was ever changed.

So, I purchased a replacement filter and it comes with a silicone gasket. My question is, should I use the gasket that came with the filter or should I instead use the black RTV?

Thanks for your help in advance. This is a great source of information.

You are correct, it is original. Personally i would go ahead and use the silicone gasket, I've never been a fan of RTV sealant. Plus it will be easier to change it again later. Make sure you tourqe it to spec and not too tight or it will leak later.

You can do either, I've personally done both and they work great. The trick is to torque the bolts down correctly. That is key!

The ATX filter kit you buy from the dealer includes a tube of RTV.

BTW: I hope you bought the correct fluid. Chrysler now reccomends ATF-4, which can only be purchased at the dealer. ATX-3 is what came stock in 98.
I have heard that ATX-4 is a pure synthetic version of ATX-3. It cost $38 for a gallon, I have heard that it is worth the extra cost.
