what are the advantages to installing an electric fuel pump opposed to having the mechanical one that comes with the engine? im tryign to figure out if i should stick with teh mechanical one or upgrade to an electric. thanks guys!

An electric fuel pump can supply more pressure and volume but you may not even need it. Is your car carbureted or FI? We need more information about your set up. If it's carbureted and you never have less than 3 psi under full throttle conditions you don't need any more. FI requires higher pressures. If you suspect the pressure is dropping too low, put a gauge on it to see what you have.

The electric pumps that racers add on their cars are also noisy. If needed, I would use a higher performance mechanical pump. A pressure regulator is also a good idea.

my engine is a carbureted 350 thats just gonna be street driven probably.

One advantage is you could wire in a disable switch and use it to disable the fuel pump. It's kind of like a cheap anti-theft device and could possibly help you with your insurance.

I've seen them ran alone or with the mechanical pump. The electric pump should be located close to the tank, as it pushes the fuel. Unless you have large diameter fuel lines and a thirsty engine, don't bother. I've seen electric pumps fail a lot more often than mechanical pumps on street cars. Splurge for a good Holley mechanical pump and one of their big gas filters (they take those old Ford fuel pump filter cartridges) and you're good to go.

I agree with everyone else. There are really no advantages unless you need a lot of fuel. Plus they are more expensive, burn out easier, and depending on location harder to change.
