cuts off while driving.
cj_206 02-10-2006, 07:31 PM :banghead: my 91 olds 98 cuts off on me while driving, then won't start back up. I had the computer replaced at the dealer, changed the coil and plug wires. After have this done it ran for about three hours in town, stop and go. then shuts off agian and won't start. The next day it starts right up but this time only makes it about two block before cutting off. (not even hot yet) Any pointers. :banghead: maxwedge 02-11-2006, 09:08 AM So when this happens do you have spark and fuel pressure, basic diagnostics here. cj_206 02-13-2006, 11:22 AM Yes, it does have the basics, fuel pressure and spark. I was thinking there is a bad connection within the coil and moudule. I tapped on them with a scew driver and the vehical started. I drove the car this morning and it cut off once, but started back up. Everything seemed to be connected proporly as far as the coil and moudule. Maybe one or the other is bad? GTP Dad 02-13-2006, 02:59 PM This is an early sign of the crank position sensor going bad. They commonly will not throw a computer code and will not set the CEL. The key here is that it runs then stalls then restarts. Eventually it will not start at all and you will get stranded. Replace it and the problem should go away. maxwedge 02-13-2006, 03:08 PM You have fuel pressure and sapark during the no start event right, do you know the presssure at the rail and do you have injector pulse when this happens, carry a can of carb cleaner with you, when it won't start spray some into the intake if it starts it's a fuel problem , if not look at spark issues. The reason I suggested basic diagnostics is you never mentioned in your post that you had checked those issues. cj_206 02-14-2006, 03:53 PM OK guys, the car shut off this morning on the way to work, it would turn over but wouldn't start. I tapped on the coil and modual with a screw driver and it started right up and made it to work. My question would be is this stroke of luck or is it still the crank position sensor? Or should I start by getting the modual tested, or new coil? GTP Dad 02-14-2006, 05:42 PM Check the ground on the module. The area under the module may be corroded due to rust and not making good contact. When you tapped it, contact was made and the car started. Also remove and clean the connection at the ignition module with some electronics cleaner and reinstall after it is dry. If the CPS were bad the car would not start by tapping the ignition module. maxwedge 02-14-2006, 07:08 PM Check the ground on the module. Good advice here, agreed. Unless as he says the time do do this by some coincidence lets it cool down some to start. cj_206 02-15-2006, 04:24 PM Thanks guys, the car seems to be starting up just fine now. I'll get back if the problem comes back. Thanks!!! AutomotiveHelper.com, Copyright ©2013
