what year motors can i use in my 96 sl2

i have a 1996 sl2 that is knocking and i have a 1992 sl2 motor that runs beautiful can i put it in my 1996 even if i have to modify a few things it is ok

well that depends on how far you want to go. from what i understand, 91-92 need to be used with there pcm. which legally, you can not turn an ob2 vehicle to ob1. just stay away from 91-92

Don't count it out quite yet. I asked a former saturn tech and here is his answer.

"NO. 91's and early 92's have different CRANKSHAFTS with ignition timing reluctor (pulse generating) rings that are incompatable with the PCM's for any other years. The BLOCKS are 100% interchangeable for ALL YEARS. SOHC and DOHC BLOCKS are all basically the same."

Not sure how you could go about finding out what crank is inside. Before I opened it up though try running the vin at your work to get a date of manufacture.
