Shift release buttongprixgtp 02-09-2006, 09:15 AM Ok I removed my stock stereo and replaced it. Now my shift release button does not want to work, I have to fight with it and finally I can push it in to shift out of park. Since it happened right after I swapped stereos I am wondering if there might be a wire related to the stereo or if I did something taking the trim off around the steering wheel and such. The shift lock release on the base of the shifter also will not work to release it either, you can push it in with a screwdriver but it also will not release the shifter. As always any help mucho appreciated. John BNaylor 02-09-2006, 10:38 AM Double check the wiring and electrical connectors from the steering column, into the dash and then to the center console. gprixgtp 02-15-2006, 03:14 AM Ok I found no wires disconnected or cut. I pulled the center console apart and unplugged the shift interlock plug. I have power from the green wire along with a second wire. All I could find in the MOTOR tech manual is if I have power to that green wire then the interlock is bad. It looks to me that you have to replace the entire shifter. Is there a way to just replace the interlock? Also when I let the car warm up before trying to get out of park, the shifter button in a whole lot easier to use. Instead of fighting with it for up to five minutes it usually only takes a few tries to push it in. Oh and how in the he** do you get the shift handle off the shifter? I would like to check it and make sure I don't have anything jammed or broken in that. BNaylor 02-15-2006, 09:19 AM Ok I found no wires disconnected or cut. However, try the boneyards and you might be able to save some money. One guy in the GP forum got the solenoid off a Buick Regal. To remove the knob. There is a big retainer that looks like a staple at the front of the knob. You'll be able to feel the indentation. Remove it carefully with a small screwdriver and the knob will come off.
