My wifes's 03 LX 2.4L with 65,000 mi started sputturing and running rough on the way to work this morning while at highway speed. The engine light came on at the same time, and it would not let her drive more than 45mph. As long as she stayed under 45, it ran like normal, but if she tried to speed up, it started cutting out on her. Almost llike it had a rev limiter on it, but I have no idea what RPMs she was turning (couldn't be that high though).

When I went to check the car, I noticed the engine light on and it would not let me rev the car above 3500 rpm while in park, or while trying to accelerate and drive it. I shut the car off, then restarted it, and no light or hesitation.

On her way home a few minutes ago, it started the cutting out again, and the light came on. Same symptoms as this morning. I can't get it in to the shop until tomorrow.

It did this exact same thing about 10,000 miles ago, and the only thing the shop could find was a code that made them change the airfilter. That's all they did ($200, BTW, for the diagnostic and filter), and it has ran fine since. I checked the airfilter. It looks fine, but is it possible that's all it is? Is it possible to be clogged in 10,000 miles? I've been changing them at about 20,000 and haven't had problems until the last episode.

I guess I should mention it had the plugs & wires changed, & tranny flushed about 5,000 ago.

I hate to spend another $200 for them to tell me it needs another airfilter !!!!!! Any suggestions?

I would guess maybe fuel pump. Does it accellerate quickly if you punch down on the gas?? That would be my guess, but I am not a mechanic.

It accelerates fine until it reaches 3500 rpm. I've finally spoken to a Chrysler mechanic that tells me it's PROBABLY either the MAFS or one of the O2 sensors. More than likely the MAFS since it apparently showed an "intake side" error last time. However, he tells me either one of those would not generate a soft code. The CEL should stay on until the code is read and cleared.

Tried several shops today. They told me no use bringing it in unless the CEL is on. So I went by an Auto zone and checked to see if any codes were stored....They weren't.
