I'm planning to get a used car later on this year and my brothers' 15yr long experience with cars say that toyotas are the best - engines never break down before 250,000 miles, rarely need work, etc.

is he more or less right?

well... i have a toyota CS corona '83 model with 200117 k's on the clock and she still runs perfect... since i've had it its been reco'd once (but it didnt need it) i only did it coz i bored it and it seemed appropiate

I agree with your bro. As long as your toyota is RWD and comes with one of THESE ENGINES you should enjoy it for a looooooong time and kick some ass on the side.

-FE type engines are not meant to perform. they are family car engines and Will never go as well as a G type even if heavily modified.

These are the toyota engines that were actually designed to be sporty, the rest should be avoided if at all possible. My 4a-ge has 270,000km on the original bottom-end and It still goes to 8000+rpm every day no worries at all.
