car FAILED emission test.. please help!!! :(elusive84 02-02-2006, 06:49 PM i have a 1990 accord that actually managed to double the NO ppm limit of 727 and the reading was 1489 NO ppm. this car has had another emission test done in mid 2001 and it passed with great results and that time my NO ppm count was 451. in between 01 and 06 there was a period of over 3 years where the car was kept in the garage with no storage techniques used. refer to this thread for more info about that. http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1491456 i replaced the fuel pump and the puppy fired up no problem but now the car failed emissions today. the guy who did the test claimed it could be my oxygen sensor, catalyic converter, or EGR. what would you guys say is the most likely cause of the problem? i've also noticed in the short amount i've driven it lately it seems to be guzzling more gas. hopefully some of you knowledgeable guys out there can give me some advice because i hate playing guessing games especially when it cost time and $$$. thanks all in advance. (btw the car passed the CO % reading and HC ppm and i've also changed the oil as recently as yesterday) Igovert500 02-02-2006, 08:34 PM Hmm, well an failing o2 sensor would likely throw a Check Engine Light. A clogged cat would smell weird, reduce gas mileage, cause excess soot and possibly even black smoke out of the tailpipe. While the EGR commonly gets clogged on those older Accords and can be cleaned by yourself for next to nothing. So I'd start there. If you do a search for "cleaning EGR" or "clogged EGR" I'm sure you will find plenty of info. There may even be something about cleaning it in one of the sticky threads up top. Lastly, before going through emissions again, swing by your local autoparts store and get the bottle of stuff called something like "gaurenteed to pass emissions" the bottle has a red Mitsubishi 3000gt on it, and basically says it gaurentees you to pass emissions if you have a working cat...so I'd try a bottle, couldn't hurt. elusive84 02-02-2006, 09:03 PM Hmm, well an failing o2 sensor would likely throw a Check Engine Light. My gas mileage was poor too. Direction on how to do it are there. Took me only two hours start to finish, a normal person could get it done in 1/2 hour. I however am not good with cars... elusive84 02-03-2006, 04:11 PM Look at my thread just at the bottom of the page, I had to cleam my EGR ports, they were clogged up good. I however am not good with cars... yeah my gas mileage is pretty poor too. when you changed your oil when you egr was clogged was your oil REALLY black, because mine was black as wesley snipes. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
