opinion on welding exhaust manifold ON-CAR

95 Riv 3800. Exhaust manifold is tubular steel.

I have developed a small crack between one of the port tubes and the collector. What does anyone think about MIG welding it ON THE CAR?

I propose this:

1) Run the car until the manifold is hot.
2) Disconnect the battery
3) MIG weld the crack.

Opinions?

I had/have the exact same problem on my 95. I had a cracked tube off of the front right cylinder (don't recall which number) and I have a crack somewhere under the shields on the crossover pipe that I need to tackle soon. The port welded up nicely, at least on the parts I could see (the crack extended all the way around the pipe and could not be completely welded on the car). The battery was disconnected for this operation to safeguard the PCM. Welding the manifold hot is a great idea that I didn't think of because the crack will be a lot smaller if it expands ideally.

I like the idea of welding on the car, if you can seal up most of the crack. Welding off of the car can cause warpage or an uneven seam that may not bolt back on the block nicely, depending on the location of the crack. Being as it sounds as you have the same crack as I did, I'm sure other owners have had the same problem and can comment on this.

why not just replace it?? its not a hard job if you are somewhat mechanically inclined

expense.

Frankly, that's what I would've done in years past. But as I've aged, I've come to realize that REPLACING parts isn't as good as FIXING parts. ANYBODY can REPLACE.

Anybody have a problem running high voltage (MIG welding) thru the engine? (That's why I suggested disco-ing the battery).

its much better to replace a exh manifold than to repair it and they arent that expensive but hey its your car not mine .. good luck :)
