My old cougar has the same switch. It is in case of a rear end collision, it is supposed to automatically shut off the fuel supply to the engine.

As far as I can remember it should be an on/off switch. Push for off/push for on like a GFI switch in your house. If it won't trip on, check with you local ford dealer's service department, they should be able to tell you over the phone how to reset it. You may also want to check the fuse panel, if their is a bad connection you may have blown the circuit.

If this still does not work, take the two power leads and join them together affectively bypassing the shut off.

hope this helps.

Are you saying the car won't run now? The button should stay in for the fuel pump to work. If you get into an accident the inertia switch shuts off the fuel pump. To reset it, you push in the button. This switch is there for your protection so don't ever bypass it if you are going to drive the car!

I simply suggested bypassing it to see if it is the switch or another problem causing it not to work.

These are simple switches and you should be able to get a simple replacement.

That's why I stated "if you are going to drive the car". It's one thing to test the switch and another thing to leave it bypassed, if in fact it is bad.
