It seems some alero's are great, and some are horrible, so I was wondering where everyones was made and if you think yours is a dud or not.

First digit of the vin:
1 or 4 is USA
3 is mexico
2 is Canada

Mines a 1, so its from the USA and mines been great.

1-USA 2000 3.4 V6 103,000 miles.

Had the usual problems, Wheel speed sensors twice, Intake manifold gasket,
Fan switch only works on the last three settings, rear speaker failure,
water pump.

I think that's about it.

Mine is a 2002 GL1 V6 silver four door and was made in Lansing, Mich. in August of 2001. Here's what I've encountered:

- Adjusted e-brake due to no grip @ around 30K miles
- Replaced Power Steering pump @ around 30K miles
- Replaced battery @ around 30K miles
- Replaced warped door panel and dash @ 35K miles
- Replaced R/F Hub Assembly @ 35K miles
- Replaced front pads and resurfaced rotors @ 40K miles. Was told rear pads were seperating...still have yet to replace them.
- Dash replaced again @ 52K miles.
- Power steering pump replaced again at 52K miles.
- Body control module replaced @ 55K miles.

All of this, except for the e-brake adjustment and brake pads were under the factory warranty or the GMPP extended warranty. I've had other stuff that needed to be replaced due to the GM techs not knowing what they were doing...I don't blame that on the car though.

The car is going in (again) tomorrow because of a steering issue that I seem to still be having. One dealership has continued to tell me that there is no issue, but I can feel something is off. I'm taking it to a different dealership this time.

Finally, despite these issues I LOVE my car. It's never left me on the side of the road, which is more than I can say about my 1997 Chevrolet Malibu that I had prior to this car.

- Jeremy

P.S. I need tires right about now as well. That's normal at 57K miles though.

Lansing, MI. Just a short drive down the road.

I think almost all Alero's (and probably Malibus and Grand Am's) were made there.

It's just an empty building now....

I thought that when they stopped making the Alero's there, they were going to start making the G6's there...am I wrong?

I know for a fact that the Chevrolet Malibu's years 97-2003 were made in either Okalahoma or Deleware. I had a 1997 that was built in OK.

G6's are made outside of Detroit (Orion Township, I think). At least I think they are (were). Can't keep it straight anymore.

Didn't know about the Malibu's - I thought that GM made all the N-body cars in the same place. I'm almost certain the Grand Am was built in Lansing also.

There isn't much for production in Lansing anymore - GM is closing the Lansing Craft Center (where they build the SSR pickup). There's a metal plant across from that, but I think that's on the chopping block as well.

Sorry for going off topic - it's not uncommon for us Michigan folks to go on a rant about the auto industry.

The GA's and Alero's were both made at Lansing, but the Malibu's were not...at least not the 97-99's.

So since the Lansing plant is gone, is the SSR done as well??

Yup. The SSR is done and the plant closes in mid March. There was something else they built there as well, but I can't remember what it was.

2001 GL made in Lansing Michigan... It's been a great car only minor problems (knock on wood)

However my security light keeps comming on and every now and then I can't start my car. I wait the 10 minutes with the key turned on and it starts, but I really wish I could correct this problem.

Just a note... from what I've heard, Lansing MI IS hell... a dark, cold, and gloomy HELL!

Actually, that would be Flint, only an hour down the highway. Hell, MI is closer - about 45 miles. :)

Lansing really isn't too bad. It's like every other "larger" city in America. It's got it's good parts and bad parts.

Is there really a Hell, MI? I thought the reference was about Detroit. I've been to Warren and it didn't seem that bad but that was 25 years ago.

Aha... maybe it could be Detroit. I took that literally. Don't know MI geography that well. I just heard a lot about the area from my ex-MSU student husband. lol. (yes, I'm a girl by the way, so don't worry) There is, however, a town called Mianus... (pronounced "my-@nus") I think in... Iowa? Not sure, but watch the movie Jackass... haha

Warren isn't bad - it's not that close to Detroit though. Detroit has cleaned up quite a bit over the past few years, thanks to hosting the Super Bowl. There are still quite a few places that you won't want to hang out after dark though. Luckily I live on the west side of Michigan - but I travel to the Detroit area for work quite often.

And yes, there is a Hell, MI. Interesting town - should you find yourself in southern Michigan, it's worth a stop just to say you've been there.

Here's the town website if you're bored.... :)

Hell, we're always bored but this is interesting. I would never have believed it. Interesting story on the web site of how it was named. I wonder if this is the only town named Hell in the U.S. Thanks for the info.

In 1841 when the State of Michigan came by, and asked George what he wanted to name his town, he replied, “Call it Hell for all I care, every one else does.” So the official date of becoming Hell was October 13, 1841...
