engine rebuild

OK here we go again. 4.6 out of a 94. Got the short block together 2 weeks ago. It would spin nicely when turn with a wrench. Now I busted 2 sockets trying to get it to move. Havent done anything to it since the 2 weeks. Also I have this one dang bolt on the cam that when it gets torqued to specs it makes it hard for the cam to turn. Did you lube all of the bearings when you put it together? (rust) Are the cams timed correctly? Use some plastigage to check cam bearings and be sure they are seated correctly. I take it that one bolt you are having problems with was loose when you were able to turn the engine over easily. You should also only rotate the crank in a clockwise direction.

Yeah the whole short block was lubed when assembled. the cams dont have bearings. The chains are not installed yet. I was just putting the cams in and am havung problems with the drivers side freezing when it is torqued to spec. Take it apart move it round lube it some more tighten back down and it still sticks.

You're right! I'm thinking crankshaft when typing about camshaft. Plastigage is still a good check. Do you have new heads or cams that could be part of the problem?

No the cams are the same ones. The heads were taken off and checked and fixed if necessary but pretty much same parts in that aspect. I have the passenger side done and I can still turn it with my hand there is a slight drag but I think that is supposed to be. The driver side I cant budge with a wrench when I put it to spec. Confuseing. I have taken it apart and see nothing different then to other. Unless the cam got bent somehow. That would suck

I am using ultra slick assembly lube. I guess I should put some down in the cylinders?

I use just motor oil in the cylinders. You want the rings to be able to seat themselves to the cylinder walls. There should be a slight drag when you turn the camshaft when everything is torqued correctly. If you are using the original heads and cams then the is no reason why the cam shouldn't spin. You could try putting the other cam on that side just to see if it will spin. My guess is someone dropped the cam!

Put another cam in it and it does the same thing. I give up. Know anytone that wants a 94 4.6 in NC
