Hello fellow Jeep owners,
Tonight when I tried to disengage my 4WD, it would go from Full Time to Part Time, but not to two wheel. The lever itself was placed in the two wheel position several times, including in Neutral, but the indicator shows that it is still in Part Time, and is obvious by the feel of the truck it is still in 4 wheel drive. I had this problem a couple years ago, but a couple forceful shoves on the lever put it in 2 wheel and the issue was gone until now. I'm thinking mabye it is a linkage issue? The fluid was changed about a month ago, so that should be fine. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

try driving with it in 4, then put it into 2, if that does not work stop the car put it in N, put the 4 wheel shifter into the 2 wheel drive position, then put the car into reverse, then into drive. I have to do that on mine sometimes because my transfer case is bad.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't work. I'm afraid I'm off to the tranny shop.

Trace the linkage to the the adjuster collar. Look for signs of the lock screw slipping. It could still be a linkage issue. Some tranny shops won't tell you and just charge you for a case rebuild.

If had the same problem on my 96. If its not that linkage you might want to try what BenBB suggested above again. I read in one manual for some vehicle that thats the proper way to engage disengage 4wheel when its not the newer on the fly version. I do it every time now and dont have problems any longer. Drive in 4 wheel, stop put transmission into N, move 4wheel lever all the way down to 2 wheel, out transmission in R and back up about 10 feet, then into drive. Its worth a try

I gave it a couple shots, but it still did not come out. Actually it stayed in part time 4 wheel but only the two front wheels lit up on the console. I gave it a good shot of gas and could tell it was not only the two front wheels engaged. Looks like i'm into the linkage next. I'm a little leary about doing it myself, but I'll have my trusty Haynes at my side. Thanks again........

this may sound stupid, but how are your tires?if they are not equal in size, pressure or wear, they will rotate at different speeds and this causes the front and rear driveshafts to rotate at different speeds and this binds up the t-case.
