1996 3500 van toasted trans.

4 spd. overdrive automatic is shot.......seems to be the 42 rh / a518......can I just buy a three speed and switch my o.d. unit over???

i have an 46RH a518 with overdrive also

I know what burns up the transmission.Check the bottom transmission line towards the radatior(rubber hose part),there is a plastic checkball inside that line and there is a problem with that checkball.The plastic checkball melts and plugs the line right up.Get rid of that plastic checkball and no more burned up transmission.There is a tsb on that if you want to know.Thank a dumb engineer for that at Chrysler and it was a dumb idea.

The plastic checkball is white in color.It is inside the rubber hose part.The rubber hose part is removable from the line using a 3/4'' anda a 7/8'' wrench to remove it from the line.If you can pass a long #2 phillips screwdriver in the line to remove the checkball.

if my van will only move forward and not go to N or Reverse. do you think the checkball could be the problem?

THere is something broken,burned up clutches inside of the transmission and that checkball will not be the cause
