Hi,

Hope you know that there is a timing mark on the crankshaft and each of the cam shafts sprockets that must be very precisely aligned. If they are properly aligned, you don't need to ask yourself this question. you should have no problem.

Do not overthight the bolt for adjusting the belt tensionner. Use a torque wrench if possible.

Also while there (a really big job already done) it could be a good idea to change the water pump.

yes i know about the timming marks and they are in alinement, but it still acts like it is out of time. i also have a manual.

If the timing marks are properly aligned and the tensionner is ajusted, then the timing (between the crankshaft and the camshafts) should be Ok. The problem must be elswhere.

with the old timing chains if you were 1 (one) tooth off it would not run right. with the belts if your alignments are not exact!!! it will not run right...
by the way how is the condition of the distributer? if you can adjust the distributer with the engine running see if it smooths out by adjusting it, if it does your timing belt may not be right but if this solves your problem leave it alone!!!!!

it will not even start at all. in fact it acts like its fighting with itself and i replaced the distributer as well as the plugs and wires cap and rotor and i checked to make sure the wires are in the right order.

Hi cwpikle,
ok lets go back to the basics. im not sure because its been a long time since I worked on a voyager. is the distributor in correct does it only go in one way or can it be 180 degrees out some have a slot in center and others have a slot off center so it can only go in one way, if it has a gear it must be aligned w/ #1 cylinder in compression stroke TDC and of course timeing belt and gears must be in correct position. now I'm not trying to be funny are you sure when you put the sparkplug wires on they are not in reverse (I mean did you look at the engine correctly and identify # 1 cylinder.) Believe it or not some actually make this mistake because the engines are now side mounted(know the front of the engine I know this sound odd but its been done) I know because I have had to correct this mistake. the wires were in the correct positions if you look at engine backwards. just a word of encouragement start from scratch even the best make these mistakes. Lets hear how you make out dont give up.
