Is it possible to swap out the original 3800 thats in the car for a little 4 cylinder just temporary until I get the 3800 back working.

I was just wondering if it was possible at all, if it isn't I'm going to be on the bus for a few months :(

Not unless you want to rewire most of the car. Each engine has its own wire harness, sensors, and computer. They are not interchangeable! The 3800 is a sophisticated engine with sequential port fuel injection. It's highly computerized and very dependent on the complex wiring for fuel management, ignition, and all the various sensors.

So would another 3800 make it so I don't have to change everything?

Are there any other compatable engines that would keep the changes down to a minimal?

I'm not an expert on this engine, but it's a good bet that you can only swap in another 3800 to avoid having to rewire. Still, you'd better also match years just to be sure. They can change a lot of components from year to year! So get one that came out of the same car, same year. Don't try a sister vehicle, they do change wiring of some components from one brand to another even with the same engine.
