1997 Explorer: Problem with locks95_Grand_AM 01-17-2006, 06:00 PM I just bought a 97 explorer and the back doors dont open from the inside and they dont lock. way2old 01-17-2006, 07:09 PM Have you checked to see if there is a child safety lock on the rear doors? yotermanic 01-23-2006, 12:00 AM Just a helpful hint: 97 and 98 explorers were kinda known for shoddy door latches that caused lock and opening problems. The parts are cheap but kinda a bear to put on. jenwood66 01-26-2006, 11:05 AM I have the same problem with my back doors on my 97 explorer..what parts need to be replaced? The rear doors lock but you can't open from the inside. Also is this something that can be tackled at home? eldridge1 01-26-2006, 08:30 PM I've got a 1996 Explorer and have replaced the rear door latches for the very same reason. They work using a gear action and the teeth of the gears are made of the same hard plastic material as the handle itself. Consequently, the teeth break somewhat easily. The new ones I installed a couple of years ago need to be replaced again. I think they were less than $10.00 each and not terribly difficult to install. zillapar 02-02-2006, 12:04 PM How do I fix it? The front passenger door is broken. Can't open it inside or out. Key just turns in lock. Child safety lock is NOT on. eldridge1 02-03-2006, 08:13 PM It sounds as though the internal metal rods that connect your door handle and lock to the latch have become disconnected. Sometimes these are connected with plastic clips that can break. To fix it you'll have to remove the door panel and have a look. If the door won't open this will be tricky but not totally impossible. You may only be able to get the panel partially removed and you can reach in and try to release the latch manually. Be careful, there are sharp edges in there. I haven't had this problem with my Explorer, but I did with another car and the replacement clip only cost a couple of bucks. As with many do it yourself efforts, aptitude and patience will be big factors. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
