But didnt find what is going on with my TB in the 40 some threads on this achilies heal of the TBs.

We recently had the fan clutch replaced under warranty. Everything was great, fan stopped making that noise and all was well. Now the fan is making the roaring noise/loss of power again, but only when the TB is cold (less then 40 degrees F out). It goes away when you get above 150 on the inside temp gauge. I talked to the service writer at the dealership where I had the work done and he said this is normal. I realize I am not an experianced tech, but shouldnt the computer keep the fan off till it warms up, not the other way around? Its usually only about 2-5 minutes to warm it up enough to stop the roar and loss of power but it (in my mind) is too long. Anyone else have this going on?

Side note, anyone else having alot of valve lash noise when the engine is cold?

This has been an on going but occasional issue on my 2002 TB since new, had 2 reprogram up dates done no change, never replaced the clutch, happens very occasionaly usually on start up. Piston slap cold has been there since new, everyone probably has it.

I have the lifter/whatever-it-is noise on startup, sounds like valve lash but isnt.

Did you make sure that the clutch that was replaced was the new part number? In 04, GM revised the clutch to make it not fail as quickly, so most newer 04+ TBs dont have this problem as often as the 02-03s do. Also, do you have the most current engine software? Sometimes this can yield a fix to the fan staying on.

Same problem here... I need to take mine in to the dealership for replacement. Is there a recall for this yet? It looks like it has happened to more than a few of us. Mine 02 TB from time to time on star ups, sounds like a diesel truck and I have heard clicking noises coming from the engine, so I know it has to be the FAN CLUTCH. I love my TB, but I hate when sh8t like this happens to any of my cars.

Peace!

You're telling me, my TB is in the shop as I type this for the fan clutch. The parts and labor is covered under my warranty but not the reprogramming of the PCM. And that costs 1 hour labor. WTF. I hate dealerships! /rant

I Know what ya mean. They do their best to slip in a diag fee or atleast an hours worth of labor so they collect from you AND warranty :banghead: Some do & some don't, that's what sux so bad about dealerships, no consistancy. Many times you can get them to drop it if you have them do some knucklehead work like a tire rotation or coolant drain/fill. This is a weird clutch fan setup on the TB's. Never saw an electro-mechanical one like these before :uhoh: .

It's not really the fact that I have to pay an hour worth of labor. It's the fact that I have to pay that on top of my warranty deductible ($175). Don't ask, its a **cked up plan that I somehow got finagled into.

3/36 coverage on the clutch, of course no mention of year, age or mileage on your truck.

Due respect , but I cannot see your warranty fine print from here, all independent warrantees have different coverage, read the policy see what is covered.

I'm thinkin' it will. i bought the ext. coverage for my 02 and i dont believe its anything fancy but everything is coverd but headlights brake pads belts and hoses, that kinda stuff. 100.00 deductble. fan clutches aren't really a wear item so it would be worth callin' the place up and askin'

My 2002 TB was just diagnosed with a bad fan clutch. The dealership was closed so I took it someplace else to tell me what was wrong. I'm sure this is what is wrong but they wanted almost $600 to replace it and then replace my serpintine belt for another $100. My TB isn't under warranty any longer so this will all be out of pocket. They also told me to be careful because it could cause a lot more damage if I drive the truck like this. Is this true? I don't believe them. I found the part at AutoZone for $236 + tax so is it something that I can replace myself. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but don't know much about things like this. I didn't want to get in over my head. Any advise?

Opie, definately dont pay a dealer $600+ to do this job! The serpentine belt R/R is all labor overlap, so they shouldn't charge you more than the cost of the belt for that (maybe $50 tops). I'd buy an OEM GM fan assembly online, or pay an independant shop to do it. If there's no fan r/r details here, try trailvoy.com

So I took my 04 TB Ext into the dealer "again" for high rpms on a cold start. Once put into drive the engine doesn't kick over and revs high around 1000 rpm for a couple of minutes. After that it kicks over and everything is fine. The motor is way loud and there is no pick up until the engine kicks over.

The dealer thinks I'm crazy because they can't find anything wrong and of course, it doesn't show up on the computer.

I told them it has to be a cold start and put into drive. I have to physically tell them what to do to see the problem You would think it's simple; start the truck in the am, put into drive and drive away.

Anyway, is it possible it could be this fan clutch that I keep reading about?

Yep, sounds like the clutch. Get it replaced with the new GM part number and have your truck flashed with the most current software. Should take care of the problem.

Just came across this thread. My 03 LTZ was just diagnosed with a bad fan clutch on Tuesday (makes a clicking noise). The dealer wanted $835 to fix it! (I told them to hit the road).

So what exactly does this mean? Is it safe to continue driving the vehicle like this? What does a more realistic estimate for repair sound like?

My 02 TB LTZ also started making a ticking noise under the hood once in a while. It does sound like it is coming from the fan clutch. When the rpm's are brought higher it goes away or when you here the fan clutch begin to roar it also disapates. Does this sound like Fan Clutch problems? I too have the extended (Power Train Warranty) but don't think that this is covered. I only have 108,000 Km (or 42,000 miles) on my truck. This shouldn't be gone already I feel. The truck is not abused, it is mainly driven by my wife. Any suggestions or am I S.O.L. and should just suck it up and replace it? Is there a chance with this thing coming off and into the Radiator?

Welcome to AF, 2 parts to this question, should it be warranted, we'd all like that, not much chance on a 5 year old truck, no I don't think the fan will come off, there have been problems with this clutch, not so much with clicking, but staying locked up. BTW this thread is too old, in the future start a new one if it is over 90 days old.

Like Max says, 5yrs and anything could happen. You could call a GM customer line and and see what they advise. If you have an excellent service history with a particular dealership, there is good chance they will help you with respect to cost. Remember, GM builds cars, they dont sell them. Dealerships are independantly owned/operated businesses. If you are not satisfied with one, go to another.
