2005 SE vs SLE advice

I'm looking at getting a 2005 SE or SLE and was wondering what a guy with a handful of tools, a little bit of knowledge under the hood, and a limited budget can do to increase the performance of the stock engine.

I know that there must be number of folks out there with a whole bunch of ideas so let em flow.

I would go with the SLE personally...And as for more horsepower try an intense pc for your car...
