I have a 1995 Bonneville 3.8. I replaced the fuel pump about 7 months ago with a Napa Fuel pump.About every 2 months since then, The car has left me stranded and wont start. It is Definitely a fuel related problem. Normally when you turn the key the first click, you can here the fuel pump kick on for a few seconds to send fuel to the motor. At these times,When it wont start, the fuel pump dont kick in. After you let the car sit for a few hours, it will start up like nothing ever happened! Here is what I have noticed and what I have tried. I have noticed that normally the fuel pump is very quiet except for the time before it is not going to start. At this time, the fuel pump makes a whining sound that is very noticeable Outside the car.It will not stop running, but if you shut it off when the fuel pump is making this sound, it will not restart. There is no certain length of time the car needs to reset. It has been as little as 4 hours, and as many as 30 hours! The last time it did this I tried to unhook the battery and try to reset the computer. This did not work.I have also tried replacing the inline fuel filter, (which was fine), I have tried loosening the gas cap, Kicking the gas tank (LOL), and numerous other things that I could think of. This only happens like I said about every 2-3 months or so, but it is aggravating none the less! The only thing I thought of but havent checked into is a fuel pressure regulator. I dont know that much about them to know if that could cause my problem or not. Any help or Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

It's a bad fuel pump. Even new ones can be bad right out of the box. The ONLY thing that will cause a fuel pump to be noisy is when it is bad. The bushings that the electric pump's armature spins in are bad, and when the pump stops in just the wrong spot, it won't work until it's bumped off the bad spot (either by movement of the vehicle or attempted engagement of the pump)

I agree with RICHTAZZ.
If you are going to another brand new pump look for correct PSI for your model. The SSEi require higher PSI for ex.

Richtazz, just currious would the passkey give the same results if he didn't wait long enough during starting attemps?

I thought a fuel pump either worked or it didnt. Not hit and miss???

I am curious, did you have the same problem before you installed the new pump?

No,I drove the car for almost a year and a half before the new pump without a problem.

Good idea Auto Trainy, but since it takes sometimes hours, I would say that the passkey isn't the issue here. "Keep it Simple" thought processes and checking all possibilities are the right approach, especially when your DIY.

My 95 bonneville will not start at times. No smell of fuel. Cranking is good.

Thanks,
