Before the head can be removed does the camshaft and/or rockers have to be removed first or can they be left connected to the head?

You don't have to take any of that out. Once you get the valve cover off there are around 8-10 bolts to remove, take off the header, plugs, hoses, t-belt, etc; and that should be it.
