I'm looking at a first time minivan purchase and could use any advice I can get. The vehicle in question is a '96 Grand Voyager SE with a 3.3 liter engine with 110,000 miles.
1) what should I look for?
2) what are reliability issues?
3) any good/bad issues?
4) recall issues?

Any help would be great and very much appreciated!!!

Many Minivan owners don't take very good care of their vehicles (my observation). They drive them without maintainence until they die or have major issues and then they complain that their Minivan is a piece of junk and they will never buy from that manufacturer again. It totally baffles me why someone would taxi their kids around in a vehicle in poor condition. I assume it is b/c it is the wife that drives it and doesn't take any responsibility for the upkeep. Mine won't check anything, she would drive until the wheels fell off if I wasn't around. With that said, a used minivan (of any kind) is a total crap shoot. One major issue can be the transmission. These take a specialized transmission fluid (ATF +3 or ATF +4). One quart of the common Dextron/Mercron can cause the trans to fail within a few hundred to ten thousand miles without much of a warning. I bought one used and discovered (receipt found under the seat dated two weeks before it was traded in) that someone had put the wrong fluid in the trans, I changed it immediately and it still works but it is slow to shift out of 1st when speeding up and back into 1st when slowing down. When you buy a minivan with 110K miles, you need to reserve enough cash to get Shocks/Struts/Alignment, Brake Job front and back, New belts and hoses/coolant/battery, Check A/C for proper charge, Tune up /plugs/wires/airfilter/fuel filter/injecter service and Transmission Fluid and Filter (Dodge dealer only). These things are typically neglected by Minivan owners and they tend to trade them in when they are no longer safe or relyable to drive.

I'm really not partial to dodge/chrysler/plymouth minivans. Neon_rt id right. Think of a mom of three trying to get kids/babies into the van. Think she's gonna check all the fluids, brakes and suspension or just drive off?
