Are you looking for a scanner to read the codes and tell you what's wrong with your vehicle, or are you looking for something to retrieve the codes? The easiest and least expensive tool is a jumper wire placed in the "test" and "ground" terminals of your ALDL, located under your dash. You then turn the key and count the flashes on your service engine soon light. From there you can look up the codes to see what they mean. That is a brief description on how to access and read your codes. There is a little more description involved in the procedure, and it is fairly easy to do, if you are interested, I can post the whole process. Most auto parts stores sell a little tool that also takes the place of a jumper wire if you don't have one.

^^^ that only works on 93 Pre GM cars. He'll need a scanner/reader to get his codes.
