See if you grab the crank balancer will it move around by trying to wiggle it on the crank, also see if the crank bolt is loose, crank balancers on those engines have been known to come apart. If this process is beyond your mechanical level have some one look at/ listen to it on site. Common sense would dictate that in this environment we are handicapped by not being able to hear the noise and perform the basic checks.

Gee, dosen't that sound familiar? You were told that already "damn it",quoted because that's not going net you much help.

Your problem is definatley in the balancer area sense the noise continued with the belt off. However, there still may be the possiblity of timing chain stretch and it's rattling around. And any time a pulley is out of whack on a serpentine, keep an eye on how the belt tracks with tensioner movement. Could be bent crank too although not very likely, you'd feel that for sure.
