the point at which the clutch disengages has been slowly getting lower and lower - now today its the other side of the floor. With the pedel down to the floor the car creeps forward and changing gear is damn near impossible

Is there some adjustment I can make - and if so how - I know one end of a spanner from the other but thats about it

By what you stated I would frist check the slave cyclinder and see if its not leaking fluid. My vehicle had the same problem, the clutch pedal would go lower and lower with every use and then I couldn't shift. I did some checking and it turns out that the slave cyclinder went bad.
