well, what happens, after extended highway driving on 85+ degree days, the car just dies. the idle is rough, and no engine power, eventually it stalls while idling. it's NOT overheating. after the car sits and cools for about 45 minutes, it fires right up, and all is normal.

a friend had the same problem, but it "went away"

147k miles on chassis, engine has 50k, trans has 39k. is there a thermal overload on the ignition or something? obviously, it is tempurature related.

please, any ideas will be appreciated! TIA

Pretty dead...

I dun' know the problem. Could it just be coincidence it happens in hot weather? I mean, 85 is not nice to an engine, but as hot as an engine gets on its own, it laughs at that. I dun' know, i'm no mechanic... You may wanna have a scan on your computer, justa double check.

Go to this link and follow the directions to see if your car is throwing any codes:

http://www.neons.org/neontsb/diagnost.htm

Some possibilities may be a bad spark plug coil pack, bad sensors, bad plugs or wires.

Also judging by your post you have had a motor and tranny swap done. Make sure you have the right computer (PCM). If you have an SOHC motor you must use a OCM for SOHC. Also same for tranny. If you have an automatic and put a PCM from a 5 spd in, that will cause problems too. Also check your connections to the PCM.

As far as heat goes, no 85 is not that great for cars, but nonetheless your car should die just because. I live in Phoenix where temps have gone past 120. A lot of manufacturers have "proving grounds" out here because we have some of the worst conditions to drive a car in...namely heat and dust.

If all else fails, check out the forums on www.neons.org They have a lot of knowledgable people on there.

it IS throwing codes, but i didn't know how to get them. thanks Kat.

the engine and trans were just swapped with lower mileage ones. still OBD1 and still auto. so, that's not the problem. and it ONLY happens when the weather is above 85deg. yesterday was ~75 here, and i drove for 1.5hours to visit parents, no problems at all.

My wild guess is gonna be you have a bad sensor somewhere and that heat is affecting it. Did you try the codes from the link I gave you above yet?
